Per er 55 år. Efter et liv som misbruger forsøger han at samle stumperne og skabe en rigtig familie. Per blev stoffri, da han fik datteren Ilse med misbrugeren Christina, som er psykisk handicappet, men magtede ikke forældreansvaret alene, da forholdet til Christina gik i stykker. De sidste 8 år har Per haft sin datter hver anden weekend. Resten af tiden bor Ilse hos sin plejemor. Nu har Per fået konstateret dårligt hjerte og synes at Ilse skal have mere kontakt til sine biologiske forældre og kontakter Christina, som stadig er misbruger. Alligevel forelsker de sig igen i hinanden og Pers drøm om en familie får nyt liv. Christina har dog ikke så let ved at slippe stofferne og plages stadig af psykisk ustabilitet. Udover det står Torben fra Kommunen på sidelinjen. Han skal vurdere om Pers realisering af sin drøm vil skade Pers datter for meget og skal derfor være klar til at sige stop. Pers udfordring bliver så at forsøge at balancere alle parters behov for at nå i mål.

Dreaming of a Family – pitch in English:

Per is 55 years old. After a life of abuse he tries to pick up the pieces and create a real family. Per was drug free when he had the daughter Ilse with the addict Christina, who is mentally handicapped. He could not manage the parental responsibility alone as the relationship with Christina broke. For the last 8 years Per has only had his daughter every other weekend. The rest of the time Ilse lives with her foster mother. Now Per has been diagnosed with a heart condition and he feels Ilse should have more time with her biological parents. So he contacts Christina, who is still an addict. They fall in love again and Per’s dream of a family is given new life. Christina is having difficulty giving up the drugs and is still plagued by mental instability. Torben from the municipality is watching them from the sideline. He has to assess whether Per’s realization of his dream will damage Per’s daughter too much, and Torben should therefore be ready to stop Per if necessary. Per’s challenge is to try to balance the needs of all parties before reaching his goal.
